Ghana, here I come!
08.07.2008
Okay so I am super excited. Some of you might know that I have had plans to go to Ghana for three months this fall, from August to November, and volunteer in an orphanage/pre-school or something.
You can see Mampong, Kumasi and Accra on this map. Accra is the capital and the biggest city, and where I will stay in the beginning during introduction week.
Well today I got an e-mail, telling me everything about where I am working and who I am staying with and everything.
This is really happening.
So I am working in Mampong, which is a medium sized city with a population of 35,000. The orphanage is called Mampong Babies Home and it's mostly children that's between one day (!) and four years old. So that's awesome, because I loooove working with cute babies. There are about 54 kids there, and 34 is younger than four, so there are some older ones as well.
Mampong is only about an hour from Kumasi, which is the second largest city in Ghana with more than a million inhabitants. So I can go there on the weekends and stuff if I want to see new things. But it seems like Mampong has most of the things I need as well. I have an internet café and a post office less than 1 km (half a mile) from where I am living!
I am staying with a family of six. The head of the family is a woman who's 67 or something, then there's a guy who's 52, then three people my age (20-21), two boys and one girl. Which is really, really cool! Hopefully we'll get along. Then there's another boy who's 7. I don't know the family connection between them all, but I'll probably find out when I get there.
Their house has pretty much everything I need. I'll get my own room, they have a bath room with a WC, SHOWER, running water.. Kitchen with fridge, stove, everything. Oh, and they have a TV!
I think there's about 55 days until I leave, and now I just can't wait. Of course I'll miss everyone while I am down there, but this is really an experience of a lifetime and I am so excited that I get to do this!
